Where more detailed notes are available for a chapter or book, this page will include a link to them.
> [Deuteronomy 3:18](Deuteronomy%203.md#^18), [19](Deuteronomy%203.md#^19), [20](Deuteronomy%203.md#^20) > > The believers remain in the world with the Gospel while they live (as the army of God wielding the spiritual sword) until all are saved (given *rest*). Then we shall all possess the Promised Land (Heaven) together. ^deu3-18-20 > [Deuteronomy 4:12-40](Deuteronomy%204.md#^12) > > God declares here that just as they saw no image (similitude) on Mount Horeb, but only heard a voice, so they should not make any images later on to worship. We are only to hear and keep the Word of God, not incorporate things we can visualize. Pictures of Jesus fall in this category of an image we are not to make. ^deu4-12-15 > [Deuteronomy 4:21](Deuteronomy%204.md#^21), [22](Deuteronomy%204.md#^22) > > Moses here portrays how Christ had to die for us as we go over. He came under the law (typified by Moses) and paid for our sins. Then Joshua, who led Israel over the River Jordan into Canaan, represents the risen Christ who leads us into the Promised Land (Heaven). In fact, the name Joshua is the Hebrew name for the Greek name Jesus. ^deu4-21-22 > [Deuteronomy 4:30ff](Deuteronomy%204.md#^30) > > This is now directed to us today who live in the latter days. God speaks to *us* from the fire of judgment through the Bible. He remembers His covenant that He swore to our fathers (that is, He ultimately swore to Himself as our Heavenly Father - [Heb 6:13](Hebrews%206.md#^13), [17](Hebrews%206.md#^17), [18](Hebrews%206.md#^18)). ^deu4-30 > [Deuteronomy 6:1](Deuteronomy%206.md#^1), [2](Deuteronomy%206.md#^2), [3](Deuteronomy%206.md#^3) > > This points to how the lives of the believers are *prolonged* (v2) by the Word of God (v1) unto eternity in Heaven (v3), the true Promised Land of milk and honey (which represent the *Word* of God that we eat and drink -- [Ps 119:103](Psalm%20119.md#^103); [Is 55:1](Isaiah%2055.md#^1), [2](Isaiah%2055.md#^2), [3](Isaiah%2055.md#^3); [1 Pe 2:2](1%20Peter%202.md#^2)). ^deu6-1-3 > [Deuteronomy 6:6](Deuteronomy%206.md#^6) > > As God speaks these words here (and in the whole Bible), and as the true believers read them, they are written into the hearts of His people. ^deu6-6 > [Deuteronomy 6:10](Deuteronomy%206.md#^10), [11](Deuteronomy%206.md#^11), [12](Deuteronomy%206.md#^12), [13](Deuteronomy%206.md#^13), [14](Deuteronomy%206.md#^14) > > Once we’ve enjoyed the many tremendous blessings of God’s Word we must not forget Him and go after other gods and the desire of our hearts for this world's things. ^deu6-10-14 > [Deuteronomy 6:13](Deuteronomy%206.md#^13) > > We must swear by His Name, live by Him, abide in Him. ^deu6-13 > [Deuteronomy 7:9](Deuteronomy%207.md#^9) > > A thousand generations is a way of saying *unto eternity*. The number 10, 100, 1000 represent the completeness of whatever is in view. It's like when we say, "I'll love you for a million years," meaning always and forever. ^deu7-9 > [Deuteronomy 7:25](Deuteronomy%207.md#^25), [26](Deuteronomy%207.md#^26) > > The false gods are the accursed thing, an abomination. This is the aspect of the abomination of desolation, when people worship their own, false gods (and/or themselves) over God Himself, then He leaves them to their own desolations. So God rightly warns us not to have anything at all to do with them, to stay as far away as possible from them, to despise them, lest we be drawn to them unto destruction. ^deu7-25-26 > [Deuteronomy 17:1](Deuteronomy%2017.md#^1) > > This illustrates how we cannot mingle even the slightest of our own works in our salvation because everything we do is tainted by sin, incurring even more wrath against us if we think they partly contribute to salvation. We cannot give ourselves even the slightest credit or contribution. Salvation is *all* of Christ Who is altogether perfect and righteous. He is the perfect Sacrifice and none of our sinful works and faulty attempts at obedience are involved whatsoever. It is abomination to think anything we have done at all contributes to our salvation, our best works are but dung ([Ph'p 3:4-11](Philippians%203.md)). This is what God is warning about here not to offer a tainted sacrifice (that is, anything but the perfect and complete sacrifice of Christ alone). ^deu17-1 > [Deuteronomy 20:19](Deuteronomy%2020.md#^19), [20](Deuteronomy%2020.md#^20) > > The trees that bore fruit were not to be cut down, only the trees that did not bear fruit. This principle is seen in [Matthew 3:10](Matthew%203.md#^10) and [Luke 3:9](Luke%203.md#^9). The axe is at the root of the fruitless trees ready to cut them down. That is, if we abide in Christ, we shall bear the fruits of the Spirit and live eternally with Him ([Jn 15:4](John%2015.md#^4)). But if we go our own way and are not truly abiding in Him, we shall not bear the fruits of the Spirit and shall be cut down (to employ them in the siege, or to be cast into the fire). ^deu20-19-20 > [Deuteronomy 22:9](Deuteronomy%2022.md#^9) > > This illustrates to how we are only to sow with the pure Gospel seed, not a corrupt or a mixed seed (cp [Mt 13:24](Matthew%2013.md#^24), [25](Matthew%2013.md#^25), [26](Matthew%2013.md#^26), [27](Matthew%2013.md#^27), [28](Matthew%2013.md#^28), [29](Matthew%2013.md#^29), [30](Matthew%2013.md#^30)). We must make sure what we declare comports with the Word of God alone and is not something of the world or out of our own minds. ^deu22-9 > [Deuteronomy 23:5](Deuteronomy%2023.md#^5) > > This is what God does for His people in saving them, He turns the curse into a blessing because He loves them with an everlasting love ([Jer 31:3](Jeremiah%2031.md#^3)). ^deu23-5 > [Deuteronomy 24:7](Deuteronomy%2024.md#^7) > > The thief here steals his brothers and sells them like merchandise. In John 10, A thief is someone who attempts to enter into the sheepfold (the kingdom of God) some other way than through Door/Christ ([Jn 10:1](John%2010.md#^1), [8](John%2010.md#^8), [9](John%2010.md#^9), [10](John%2010.md#^10)). Spiritually speaking, then, a thief is a false prophet declaring a false gospel to others, which is to steal them away from the kingdom of God. Then to make merchandise of them, buying and selling their soul, is the same idea ([2 Pe 2:3](2%20Peter%202.md#^3); [Mt 21:12](Matthew%2021.md#^12), [13](Matthew%2021.md#^13)). So this is the spiritual aspect of stealing, breaking the 10 commandments, etc. \[Note: There is a positive aspect to merchandising in the Gospel as well -- [Is 55:1](Isaiah%2055.md#^1).\] ^deu24-7 > [Deuteronomy 24:8](Deuteronomy%2024.md#^8) > > The dangers of leprosy point to the plague of sin. Sin is the true disease that we have and are in need of spiritual healing ([Mt 9:12](Matthew%209.md#^12)). This relates to all of the infirmities and diseases for which people desperately need healing in the Bible, they are why we need the balm in Gilead (the Gospel). When God says that the heart of man is desperately wicked in [Jeremiah 17:9](Jeremiah%2017.md#^9), the word translated *wicked* actually means *sick, incurable*. Of ourselves, there is no remedy and we shall die, we are in a fatal situation in our sin. Only Christ the Physician can heal us of our sin-sick souls and make us eternally well. ^deu24-8 > [Deuteronomy 25:9](Deuteronomy%2025.md#^9), [10](Deuteronomy%2025.md#^10) > > Loosing the shoe and spitting in the face refers to someone who is cursed, similar to those who hang on a tree. As Christ hung on the cross, it illustrated how He had became a curse for us because of our sins ([Gal 3:13](Galatians%203.md#^13)) if we are saved. Likewise they spit upon Christ ([Mt 26:67](Matthew%2026.md#^67)). > > Remember though how John the Baptist said he was unworthy to unloose Christ's shoe ([Mk 1:7](Mark%201.md#^7); [Lk 3:16](Luke%203.md#^16)). John was declaring that he was not worthy for Christ to pay for his sins (as is the case with each of us). > > To loose the shoe also points to redemption in the Bible. See [Ruth 4:7](Ruth%204.md#^7), [8](Ruth%204.md#^8) when Boaz purchased/redeemed Ruth to be his bride as the kinsman-redeemer, a type of Christ Who purchased His bride that there might be an eternal inheritance. ^deu25-9-10 > [Deuteronomy 29:4](Deuteronomy%2029.md#^4) > > They are still not saved, it was not God's plan to save them ([Mk 4:11](Mark%204.md#^11), [12](Mark%204.md#^12)). ^deu29-4 > [Deuteronomy 29:10ff](Deuteronomy%2029.md#^10) > > 1. In the first instance, every single person in the history of the world is under the Law of God. Obey the Law perfectly without sin and live. But one sin is enough to incur the penalty of eternal death ([Ro 6:23a](Romans%206.md#^23)). Under this covenant no one can become saved because we're all sinners, there is none righteous ([Ro 3:10](Romans%203.md#^10), [11](Romans%203.md#^11), [12](Romans%203.md#^12), [19](Romans%203.md#^19)). > 2. God makes His covenant promise (oath) with us and everyone in the world that He has planned to save through the substitutionary atonement of Jesus Christ from before the foundation of the world. Those under this covenant are given eternal life and a new heart and Spirit that desires and motivates us to do the will of God. And this is all by the action of God alone ([Eze 36:26](Ezekiel%2036.md#^26); [Ph'p 2:13](Philippians%202.md#^13)). ^deu29-10ff > [Deuteronomy 29:17](Deuteronomy%2029.md#^17) > > We, too, should recognize this about the world around us on a continual basis. And we see the warning in the verses that follow if we become involved with those things. ^deu29-17 > [Deuteronomy 30:10](Deuteronomy%2030.md#^10) > > The word translated "if" in this verse should be translated "because". There actually is no conditional in this verse -- indicating that this is all God's action, it is not based upon our actions. ^deu30-10 > [Deuteronomy 30:15](Deuteronomy%2030.md#^15), [16](Deuteronomy%2030.md#^16), [17](Deuteronomy%2030.md#^17), [18](Deuteronomy%2030.md#^18), [19](Deuteronomy%2030.md#^19), [20](Deuteronomy%2030.md#^20) > > This passage hearkens back to tree of knowledge of good and evil. The human race ate of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil (to go in wicked independence from and against God) unto eternal death rather than from the Tree of Life (Christ). So God reiterates this principle here, knowing that the human race has already chosen the ways of death. Only in Christ (the Tree of Life) can we find escape from the doom loop. ^deu30-15-20 > [Deuteronomy 32:40](Deuteronomy%2032.md#^40) > > God here swears an oath that He IS. He is the Ever-Present One, the I AM, from everlasting to everlasting ([Ps 90:2](Psalm%2090.md#^2)). ^deu32-40 > [Deuteronomy 33:3](Deuteronomy%2033.md#^3) > > Every one of the elect sit at the feet of Christ to receive His Word. ^deu33-3 > [Deuteronomy 33:12](Deuteronomy%2033.md#^12) > > God uses Benjamin as an illustration of a son being carried around safely, to dwell between His shoulders. Benjamin means "son of my right hand" and points to Christ, the Son of God Who sits at the right hand of God ([Jn 3:16](John%203.md#^16); [Ro 8:34](Romans%208.md#^34) and others). The beloved of the LORD dwell in safety by him, that is, the believers dwell safely in and because of Christ, they are safe from the wrath of God and from eternal death. ^deu33-12 > [Deuteronomy 33:14](Deuteronomy%2033.md#^14), [15](Deuteronomy%2033.md#^15) > > The precious fruits by the sun (the Gospel - Christ is the Sun, the Light of the world) and the moon (the Law/Word of God) of the kingdom of God (the ancient mountains and lasting hills). ^deu33-14-15

Tags: #Old_Testament #Deuteronomy
